It has long been a dream of mine to start a 5 Senses Garden here at Root. Mrs. Hemingway started one at Hunter Elementary while my children were in her class, and the experience and garden were AMAZING! When Mrs. Hemingway came to Root to join the kindergarten team, I had someone to share my dream. Soon, the enthusiasm spread throughout kindergarten. Unfortunately, how to begin was a struggle. We had two Eagle Scouts come do projects to get us started. One built the beds while the 2nd built the fence and the picnic tables. 2013-2014 was the year we were going to make this happen! But, the struggle continued. I planned a field trip to the JC Raulston Arboretum and got in touch with someone from the NCSU Horticulture Club. Just this past Monday, February 17, I got an email from Laura Kaderbek (my NCSU Horticulture Club contact) and got the best news EVER!!!!! Their club has been selected to compete in the "Come Alive Outside" Challenge. Their task is to work with a local business and elementary school to design a usable landscape. Well, they are going one step farther. They are not only working to help the students design the garden, but are also going to help us actually see the dream through til the end! Check out the link below for more information about the "Come Alive Outside" challenge.
